We Hear It Live: Rocco Deluca
From the moment that the lovely and talented Mr. Deluca of Rocco Deluca and The Burden took the stage at the Bowery Ballroom on Tuesday night, he rocked. Legend says he was practically born with a guitar in hand (he's the son of Bo Diddley's touring guitarist, thus spent much of his youth on the road) and it shows. He commands the stage alongside percussion, drums and bass, while playing the Dobro, a steel guitar that makes me weak in the knees with its gritty and powerfully raw sound.
Despite being on for a very early opening set at 7 p.m., Deluca managed to draw in a few hundred adoring fans with his softly brooding and resonant voice. It's that rock-folk that we love, though I hate comparisons so I won't draw any. Take a listen for yourself! Don't toss him away as just some "singer/songwriter" mellow stuff, Rocco ripped into some fierce guitar solos with his Dobro in hand. Check out his debut album, I Trust You to Kill Me out now.
Note: DeLuca will be the subject of a Sky One road movie featuring Rocco and his band, The Burden, a sound engineer and a certain Kiefer Sutherland (chipping in as the band's roadie, having served as the main producer of the album). It follows their progress on a small European tour.
