Behind the Line: Southpaw Pawe.Wa

What do Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss and Theodora Richards have in common? They all heart Jeffrey Pattie's glam rock line.

Madonna loves his clothes so much that she asked him to put together a few looks for her "Sorry" video. Keith Richards's daughters are such big fans that they hosted his Fall 2006 presentation at New York Fashion Week. Stella McCartney has been borrowing from his extensive vintage collection (which includes everyone from Elsa Schiaparelli to Stephen Burrows) for years. So what is it about Jeffrey Pattie's line, Southpaw Pawe.Wa, that gets rock royalty so hot and bothered? Read on, and find out for yourself!

How did you choose your colors for this season?
It was easy; my son, Jeffrey Patrick, decided on our black and white color story. He did this with a little indirect help from Theodora Richards, who happened to drop by the studio on the day we were finalizing color. Miraculously, she was wearing black and white, and carrying the most amazing vintage makeup box. When she told us, as she applied a most unusual shade of red lipstick, that the box had once belonged to Marlene Dietrich, I decided that it was a sign. The red was the perfect color to make the black and white pop. It was magic, and everyone loves our colors this season!

Did you have a muse who influenced the current collection?
When Patti Hansen, Keith Richards's beautiful wife, came down with her amazing daughters to check out the collection, she loved it. She tried on a hot mini-turtleneck dress that we cut even shorter just for fun. She looked so hot in it, that I instantly raised our dress length.

What current trend would you love to see go away for good?
I personally love leggings (or what we now call knitted pants), especially when worn with a great over-sized tee, or under a tight mini-dress or skirt, but I am already sick of the version of the trend I'm seeing all over New York—leggings under big moose dresses or floppy skirts, usually worn with flats and boots. Yuuuuck! It almost reminds me of the dancing hippos in Disney's Fantasia.

What advice would you give to a designer who is just starting out?
Dream big, but carefully. Build slowly, but surely. Know in your heart who your girl is, be patient, and stay focused, and the girl will eventually find you.

RANDOM TANGENT:
So what's the deal with the line's name? "It means power and pow wow; it's Native American." Duh.
