Chicago: Gao Brothers @ Walsh Gallery
These days China is all you hear about, so don't miss Beijing's latest export, the Gao Brothers, and their photographic and sculptural exhibit, "From China with Love." In this series of projects and installations, Gao Zhen and Gao Qiang investigate the effects of Chinese urbanization on the human spiritand prove with a punch that there's definitely more to China than plastic toys and tapioca tea.
Los Angeles: Jack Pierson @ Regen Projects
Even if you're not familiar with Jack Pierson's work, you might get the feeling that you've seen it beforeand that somewhere is Barneys New York. When chief window dresser, Simon Doonan, knocked off Pierson's assembled-letter sculptures to decorate the walls of the high-end fashion retailer, critics and artists alike exploded in protest against the blatant plagiarism. Now it's your chance to see the real thing and find out what all the drama was about.
Miami: Anna Gaskell @ Vizcaya Museum & Gardens
Best known for her photographic storylines reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland and The Brothers Grimm, New York-based artist Anna Gaskell's site-specific installation "Still Life" finds its inspiration at the Vizcaya Museum & Gardens. Using Vizcaya as a portal, Gaskell takes the viewer on a trippy game of hide-and-seekdon't miss your chance to fall down the rabbit hole.
New York City: Jeff Wall @ MoMA
Canadian artist Jeff Wall's inventive, large-scale lightbox photographs depict stories that often involve cast, sets, crews and digital postproduction, which might be why they're so often compared to film stills. (You'll be amazed at how much plot he manages to pack into a single moment!) Make sure to catch this show before May 14th, when it moves to its next destinationthe grandeur of the 6th floor at MoMA is the perfect backdrop.
San Francisco: Brice Marden @ SFMOMA
Featuring more than 100 pieces that span over forty years of his career, this exhibit includes some of the artist's most influential and energetic work. Renowned for their lyrical beauty, Marden's paintings and sculptures are some of today's most recognizable contemporary images. This unprecedented gathering of his work is one of the biggest retrospectives to date of a living artista must-see!
