Film Festival Feature: He Was A ...

The filmmaker: Frank Cappello, screenwriter and director, began his career starting a special effects and animation company, but eventually made his way into Hollywood by writing screenplays. His early directorial projects allowed him to work with newcomers Viggo Mortensen and Russell Crowe. It was his talent at writing that turned this independent filmmaker into a major studio scribe, writing on Richard Donner's Timeline, adapting the Tom Clancy novel Rainbow Six, and Constantine for Warner Brothers.

The flick: Laboring away in his tiny cubicle, Bob Maconel (Christian Slater) is about to erupt in the face of endless paperwork, taunts from his co-workers, and a general feeling of disconnect from the rest of the world. Just when he's on the verge of going postal, he inadvertently becomes a hero by saving the life of his office crush Vanessa (Elisha Cuthbert). Subsequently, the company president (William H. Macy) promotes Bob to work for him directly. His first task is to deliver a confidential envelope to the girl of his dreams. Vanessa begs him to end her life, but when push comes to shove he decides to pursue a romantic fantasy with her instead. A suspenseful, quirky and at times uncomfortably comedic drama, He Was A Quiet Man explores that blissful place that people go to when their reality is falling apart.

See it: Tuesday, April 16th

Read Frank's responses to our Big Three Questions below!

What movie character would you like to meet for drinks?
The office bully in my movie, Harper. Just seems like that guy has a lot of pent up, twisted secrets bursting to get out. Probably would have a crazy night bar hopping after he spilled the beans on his Oedipus Rex complex. If nice guys finish last, we'd be winners the entire night.

What historical time period would you visit and adapt into a film?
One thousand years after the Rapture and the start of Armageddon. Why? Well, the Biblical stories tell of a battle like no other to take back Earth from the Devil's grasp. Jesus is supposed to come on horseback wearing full battle gear, looking like some warrior from a Frank Frazetta painting. He will lead an army that would shame those sissy boys from 300. Now I'm not sure if I'd like to be there, but it would be something to see.

What is the one thing that surprised you the most about making He Was A Quiet Man?
That it was much EASIER than it should have been. From the moment I said I was making it to the moment we wrapped, it just flowed. No egos, no arguments, no major technical problems and not one union boss trying to shut us down in the streets of L.A. Unheard of. And that hummingbird that came out of the sky on the last day of shooting and landed on the only tree for several city blocks. It was only after the shooting stopped that the real hell began... :-)
