Yes, Love Hurts

And that's why sometimes, we heart dark music.

Get into the Valentine's Day mood a little early (or stage a personal protest against yet another commercialized holiday) and check out these three diverse acts who are more likely to drop an F-bomb than an L-bomb.

If you ♥ punk rock... Medicated Kisses
There's nothing we appreciate more than a female-fronted punk rock band who refuses to be cutesy. (This might be why we loved L7 back in high school.) The Boston quintet's intense rock 'n roll sound doesn't disappoint and is a perfect match for lead singer Alana V.'s deep, growling and angst-filled voice. Look for their four-track sampler out later this month.
Don't miss this track: "Fantastic Gentleman"

If you ♥ thrash metal... Bullet for My Valentine
British metalcore band Bullet for My Valentine doesn't scream "love" to you? Then we don't know what does. The sound is dark, brutal and full of chugging guitars (you can hear the influence of old-school acts like Slayer and Iron Maiden), but there are some nice melodies thrown in, too. The follow up to their debut album, The Poison, is expected to drop sometime this summer.
Don't miss this track: "All These Things I Hate"

If you ♥ trippy guitar... Darker My Love
What started off as a side project for high school buddies from California, Darker My Love exploded onto the psychrock scene with their self-titled debut. But don't write off their music as just stoner rock—the songs have a catchy, driving beat that will keep you from slipping into a permanent haze. The band will play a show in Los Angeles in mid-February before heading into the studio to work on their follow-up album.
Don't miss this track: "Summer is Here"

RANDOM TANGENT:
In 1849, Esther Howland of Worcester, Massachusetts, published the first American valentine. Thanks, lady.
