Ian's Picks Of Flicks - Oct. 19
Our film obsessed CEO, Ian Gerard, brings you his weekly installment of personal reviews on films big and small for the Pulse readers - for better or worse. Here is a full update on 2 films currently playing in a theater near you...
"The Last Kiss" - I was frankly hoping for another "Garden State" as this movie, like Garden State, starred Zach Braff....has a soundtrack curated by Zach Braff, was about a guy trying to figure out his future, who meets a hot short brunette (well played by Rachel Bilson - lucky bastard that Adam Brody, has strange best friends (kudos to a maturing Casey Affleck), etc. It was all there....unfortunately one thing was a missing... A good script! I still enjoyed much of the film (ok, I admit to minor boy crush on Zach and who doesn't love "Scrubs"... but the movie is just not that deep or believable. Sure, it did instill the fear of god in me if I ever was to cheat on the woman that I was considering spending the rest of my life with (and I assume it should be lauded for that), but where was the chemistry in the relationship that is the film's premise! Sure, you were told that Zack and Jacinda Barrett were in love and had loved each other for years...but the director did not effectively show that (show, not tell - basic film 101). And that is the film's central and fatal flaw. Show me....where's the love?
"The Science of Sleep" - If you didn't like "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" then you may want to skip director Michel Gondry's latest film. This film played Sundance last year and it definitely has that feel (and Michel was treated like a rock star at the festival....first time I've seen a young director with an entourage of 10 somehow get by me into a private party...bastard grenouille! If you like day-dreaming....or taking large amounts of prescription drugs or have a very creative imagination...or all three apply - this is the film for you. It is definitely very creative - dream worlds made all out of cardboard, but after a while because of the lack of a strong plot, it loses some of its impact. I preferred "Sunshine" because that story to me was so much more moving, but I was still happy to have taken this nocturnal ride.
